The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost region, a stretch of Atlantic coastline of ochre cliffs, hidden coves and fishing towns.
Occupying the south of mainland Portugal between the Spanish border and Cape St Vincent, the Algarve is administered from the city of Faro. Its coast shifts from the sandbar islands and lagoons of the Ria Formosa in the east to limestone cliffs in the west. Visitors come for beaches such as Praia da Marinha, the sea caves at Benagil and the rock arches of Ponta da Piedade near Lagos.
