Athens is the capital of Greece, a city of classical ruins and dense low-rise neighbourhoods spread across a basin near the Aegean.
Athens lies in Attica in southern mainland Greece, ringed by mountains and reaching the sea at the port of Piraeus. Inhabited for thousands of years, it was the leading city-state of classical Greece and keeps its monuments. Visitors climb the Acropolis to the Parthenon, walk the Ancient Agora, and take in the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.
