History of the website
and Tourism Marketing
in Poland

Visit Poland.com
Domain registration date: 04-11-2001
The domain was registered during
the early years of the internet,
eventually before
the Polish Tourist Board
had the project to make a website

Visit Poland.pl
Domain registration date: 11-02-2020

Poland.travel
Domain registration date: 10-07-2006

Tourist Information Timeline

1990 Foundation of the Agency
Polish Travel Quo Vadis

1999 Creation of POT
under the Tourist Services Act,
a law voted 25-06-1999

2000 POT POT oficially
began its activities as
National Tourism Board

2001 Registration of the domain
VisitPoland.com
04-11-2001

VisitPoland.com listed for sale
by MyDomains.com

2003 VisitPoland.com
aquired by HotelBroker.pl
VisitPoland.com turns into
a Hotel reservation Portal

2005 Some Business people
launch of the extension .travel
with the idea to create an alternative
to .com
In the following years
hundreds of other new sTLD
are launched
with the result
that .com becomes
"the one and only"
TLD
used by pratically 100%
of all international Brands

While .com is recognised all over the world
and ccTlds like .pl are know
in and beyond
their respective countries (Poland)
sTLDs also called sponsored TLDs
like .lifestyle, .shop, .travel etc etc
are much less popular.

Today there are only 18.000 active .travel domains,
less than 0.01% of all active websites

The website of the
Polish Tourist bord creates
confusion
as many tourists
can't remember the URL
and confuse it with .com
while
Poland.com
is an inactive domain

What is adding to the confusion
is the fact that versions
in other languages
all use different Urls
like Polska.travel
Polen.travel
Pologne.travel
Polscha.travel
Polin.travel

Expensive renewal
cost for .travel domains
- about 10 times higher than for a .com -
add to the fact that .travel
have not become
a well recognized domain format.

2020 World affected by Corona
VisitPoland.com
continues as an English and Chineese
speaking Tourism website

2025 VisitPoland.com
stops working,
the domain is redirected
to it's owner
PTGV.pl,
with a website only in Polish.

Poland.travel
and it's multiple manguage version
are operational websites
