Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a Mediterranean port city in north-eastern Spain set between the sea and the Collserola hills.
Barcelona pairs a medieval core, the Gothic Quarter, with the grid-planned Eixample district laid out in the 19th century. The city is closely tied to the architect Antoni Gaudí, several of whose buildings are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its best-known sights are the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, along with Montjuïc hill and Barceloneta beach.
