Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark, spread across eastern Zealand and Amager on the Øresund strait facing Sweden.
A harbour city joined to Swedish Malmö by the Øresund Bridge, Copenhagen is associated with cycling, canal life and Danish design. Sightseeing centres on the coloured townhouses of Nyhavn, the royal palaces at Amalienborg, the crown jewels at Rosenborg and the Little Mermaid statue, plus Tivoli Gardens, an amusement park opened in 1843 by the main station.
