Madrid is the capital of Spain, set on the Meseta plateau in the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.
Madrid stands near the geographic centre of Spain at around 650 metres above sea level, the highest capital in the European Union. It grew around the Habsburg and Bourbon court, which left the Royal Palace, the Puerta del Sol and the arcaded Plaza Mayor. The Paseo del Prado and Retiro park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, link the Prado, Thyssen-Bornemisza and Reina Sofía museums.
