Rome stands on the Tiber in the central Italian region of Lazio and was the capital of the Roman Empire. The Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon survive from antiquity, while later centuries added the Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona. Vatican City, an independent state inside Rome, holds St Peter's Basilica and the Sistine Chapel.
