Timeline

1920s As part of the
Kingdom of Yugoslavia
Slovenia saw promotion
for wellness,
mountains and nature tourism.

1991 Slovenia declares independance
from the Socialist Federal Republic
of Yugoslavia 25-06-1991

1991 After gaining independance
Tourisl becomes a state priority
as a source of foreign revenue
and national identity building.

1992 Introduction of the .si
internet code released 01-04-1992

1995 Establishment of the
Centre for the Promotion
of Tourism od Slovenia (CPTS)

1999 Organisation renamed
as Slovenian Tourist Board
by the Ministry of Economy
and the Austrian Wirtschaftskammer

When the national
Tourist Board of Slovenia
had the create a website
the domains Slovenia.com
and VisitSlovenia.com
were already registered.

2001 .info instead of .com
The idea came up
to use a .info domain.
.info was released 26-06-2001

.info is
one of about 1.500 new TLDs
that were created
as an alternative to .com

The Austrian Tourist board
and the Spanish Tourist board
did the same
Austria.info was registered
26-07-2001
and Spain.info
01-08-2001

Some beleived
.info would become a
serious alternative for the already
established .com

Time proved the contrary,
today, a quater century later,
.com is the only globally recognised TLD
a multitude of new TLDs
(Top Level Domains)
have strenghtened the predominance of .com

There are 160 million .com domains
and not even 4 million .info domains

.info is still in use
but it is no longer considered popular
or prestigious
in most mainstream web
and branding strategies.

Only 3 national tourist boards,
Austria, Spain and Slovenia
are still using it.

2006 Slogan
"I feel Slovenia"
created

2006 VisitSlovenia.com
aquired by Martin Winheim,
a webentrepreneur from Norway
that was blocking hundreds of Tourist domains
without ever conecting them
to usefull content

2015 The Slovenian Tourist Board
becomes an independant agency.

2020 The Tourist Board of Slovenia
missed the sale of
VisitSlovenia.com
03-09-2020 the domain was aquired
for only 5050 USD,
by Marcus Cent a web entrepreneur
from Sharjah / Dubai
who also edits the site
Visit Rome.com

Many tourist boards,
particularly those aiming for
a professional and branded online presence,
have shifted away from multiple TLDs
in favor of the popular .com

As .info domains were very cheap
and easy to register
the domain attracted many spammers.
As a result many websuers
hesitate to click on a .info site
